Not Fat Deposits, but Lymphedema – Let’s Get Rid of It!

What we often perceive as obesity, excess fat, or fat deposits on our waist, hips, thighs, or calves is actually water, waste, and toxins trapped by our bodies in the tissues, which, if there is circulation disturbance, cannot naturally be eliminated. This process is aided by machine and manual lymphatic massage therapy.

Besides blood circulation, there is another vascular system in our bodies, the lymphatic system. The lymph produced in the tissues flows through the lymphatic system and large lymphatic vessels into the venous system. Lymph movement is created by the pressure of tissue fluid, active contraction of lymphatic vessels, and the compressive effect of surrounding organs and muscles. Normally, lymph formation and drainage are balanced. In cases where vessels cannot transport lymph, persistent edema develops.

Signs of lymphedema

The unpleasant symptoms, visible as well, are due to a malfunction in lymphatic circulation, abnormal accumulation of fluid between tissues, and accumulation of proteins in this excess fluid.

The first painful sign may be swelling of the legs, which initially only occurs under stress and then subsides after rest. Later, the discomfort may become persistent, accompanied by a “heavy leg” sensation, muscle cramps at rest, fatigue during movement, and tight skin. Without treatment, the symptoms can become persistent or worsen. The uncomfortable signs indicate lymphedema. The goal is to remove excess water, waste, and toxins from the tissues, stimulate the lymphatic system, regain body shape, and relieve painful symptoms through a relaxing, pleasant treatment.

Special type of massage

Lymphatic drainage or lymphatic massage therapy is a less well-known area, although its importance is undeniable. Nowadays, many people struggle with lymphatic system problems without even knowing it.

Dr. Emil Vodder, a Danish biologist, developed lymphatic massage, a special type of massage that activates the immune system and metabolic processes, thereby facilitating the removal of waste products and reducing pain in problem areas. It also promotes body regeneration and helps heal existing inflammation and wounds. In addition to treating diseases and injuries, lymphatic massage can effectively treat cellulite areas of the body.

The movements used during massage accelerate lymphatic drainage, activating the immune system, improving blood flow, cell metabolism, and nutrient and oxygen supply. It helps the body relax pleasantly, calming the autonomic nervous system.

How does the treatment work?

During lymphatic massage at the Balance Movement Therapy and Sports Center, special machine treatments are applied that open inactive lymphatic vessels, promoting the rapid removal of fluid from the limbs. The treatment is completely painless, providing half an hour of active relaxation while healing and beautifying. Since improvement is achieved with intensive treatment, usually 5-10 sessions are needed. To achieve lasting results, it is advisable to repeat the treatment every six months.

Who is lymphatic massage good for?

The pleasant massage form can be extremely effective in treating many diseases, but it usually requires medical recommendation and supervision, so it is advisable to consult a trained professional. These include the following cases:

• After breast surgeries, especially if the axillary lymph nodes have been removed. In this case, lymphatic drainage prevents the often-developing arm edema, especially if treatment begins soon after surgery.

  • Faster absorption of edema due to irradiation, surgery, trauma-induced scarring.
  • Faster healing of surgical scars to prevent functional impairment or more serious cosmetic changes.
  • In the case of acute venous inflammation and thrombosis – in such cases, it is better to wait for the process to complete and start treatment only after complications have been avoided.
  • Cellulite, frequent lower limb edema.
  • Puffy, baggy eyes, swollen face.
  • As a complement to regenerative treatments.
  • In cases of general immune weakness, asthma, allergies, recurrent upper respiratory infections, sinusitis.
  • Migraine headaches, post-stroke condition.
  • Tinnitus, sudden hearing loss.
  • After joint inflammation and bone fractures to accelerate recovery.
  • To treat nervousness, decreased concentration, and sleep disorders.
